Nestled in our quaint coastal town, the Sunshine Inn stands as a testament to the power of vision, determination, and a whole lot of elbow grease. Built in 1905, this architectural time capsule had seen better days by 2017. Most locals thought it was destined for the wrecking ball, but not Larry and Peggy.
Every day, Larry and Peggy would pass by the dilapidated structure, their hearts aching for its faded beauty. Larry, a retired construction superintendent with a keen eye for potential, saw past the crumbling exterior to the gem hidden within. When a "For Sale" sign finally appeared, they knew it was time to turn their dream into reality.
The task ahead was monumental. The house, which had worn many hats over the years—family home, local business, and even a restaurant—hadn't welcomed a soul since the late 1970s. It lacked a foundation, the roof was more sky than shingles, and let's just say the building code violations were... numerous.
But where others saw obstacles, Larry and Peggy saw opportunities. They danced through the bureaucratic tango of engineering approvals, building codes, and Coastal Commission requirements. Then, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work.
From the underground utilities to the topmost shingle, they rebuilt the Sunshine Inn with their own hands (with a little help from some watchful local contractors and Peggy's eager brother, Tom). They gave the old girl a proper foundation, dismantled and rebuilt the walls to modern standards, and transformed it into what locals now jokingly call "the safest building on the coast."
In a nod to the inn's rich history, they lovingly repurposed the original old-growth redwood wherever possible. The living room's charming wainscotting once graced the upstairs walls, while much of the window trim began life as exterior siding. It's a beautiful blend of old and new, with the soul of 1905 and the comfort and safety of today.
Now, as you walk through the Sunshine Inn, you're not just staying at a bed and breakfast—you're experiencing a piece of local history, lovingly restored and ready to make new memories. Why not come and add your story to ours?
